If anyone has any tips for college life, esp. making friends, I'd like to hear them.

Net loss: One sister, off to University. A few tears.
Net gain: One free, well-thumbed copy of Stephen King's "Duma Key", supplied by a friendly cabbie who had finished it. I noticed it in the trunk when he was taking out our bags at the coach station, and he just handed it over.

Funny thing; my bowels are usually more upset than Snooki's parents, but it's always completely calm by the time I actually sit down at the U. I assume it's my nervousness about being the only child who hasn't lived on his own before. MJ even has her best friend in her second year at her school, a grizzled veteran who I find vaguely attractive.

Said friend is a girl, fyi.

My jitters aren't helped by Mum's tendency to occasionally bust out with common- and not so common-sense tips. I know she says I'm the one sent to 'keep [her] humble', but it does get just a bit irritating being told that I should be told to do laundry on Friday often. She also mentions occasionally how unhygenic English people tend to be, based on her experiences in college here before I was born. She also said this while we're in the third day of wearing the same outer clothes. It's certainly not like we've been sweating in 'em.

"You'll be fine," she says a few minutes later. I'm not sure which of us she's reassuring.

Turns out I didn't really need a computer, much less the mid-range beast I opted for, but I'm rather niggardly most of the time(church, lunch, and bus fare, back home), and regret not my splurge.

There are an awful lot of brown people around.

I know that Indian immigration had a spike some time ago, but there are a tonne of those of Arab descent around, a lot more there were in [town my sister is going to school in]. I've heard how "the Chinese" don't "integrate" into communties they join. I'm not sure that's true, but the Arab folk around here are integrating like a house on fire. In fact they are integrating both themselves, and other cultures entirely. It is possible to walk into a single fast-food joint and walk out with kebabs, burgers, and pizzas, though I'd hope they weren't all for you.

My dorm room is one of several in a "flat". Said flat is, of course, on the top (third) floor, though I'm the second door in said flat. Of course, the kitchen and bathroom are at the other end. There's no common room, which means I actually have to put effort into making friends. There's one lock for the ground-floor door, and a second for the flat and each individual room. I'm wondering how the keymaking on that works. The night I moved on for good, I locked the door behind me when I went to the bathroom, only to find Mum and Dad--who were waiting for their cab--banging on the door a few seconds later, panicked at not being able to get out. I pointed out that the little knob on the inside of the door was the lock, and I had seen Daddy using it earlier.

Mum, of course, still blamed me. I let it go.

I took it as an article of faith that animation majors would have a higher proportion of, well, geeks than most fields. The lad behind me in Induction, a lad also named "Matthew" was wearing a Watchman shirt. As I struck up a conversation, I found myself whether to make a joke about Dr. Manhattan's block n' tackle.

There seem to be an inordinate amount of cute girls, and many of them even have proper teeth. Most are, of course, white-and a pale white, at that-but there are a large amount of Arabic, Indian, and Chinese students. I live in a black-majority country, so I don't see many white people, much less any with British accents. I'm tempted to exagerrate my Bahamian accent-I normally sound more or less American-to attract women, but I think it's weird enough using British idioms without the accent, innit?

I just installed iTunes, to see if I can get the Batman episodes I've missed, and maybe a season pass for Fringe.

Turns out that the libraries of the people on the network are all automatically visible to everyone with iTunes.

It also turns out that I can't get an iTunes account unless the billing address on the card matches my location.

Turns out iTunes doesn't service the Bahamas.

Turns out I'll have to wait until I can get a Barclays' account with a debit card.

Turns out I hate Apple Inc. even more than I thought.
