"I've seen it all I got nothing to prove"
Jul. 9th, 2010 08:58 pmRemember how I pointed out, in my Honor Harrington rant, that it would be a good idea if, instead of having chars tell us how awesome they thought our girl was, it would be better if we were shown a character trying to emulate her, possibly including trying to gain a fraction of her martial arts prowess?
A few chapters after the excerpts I posted, we meet Honor's student Grayson Space Navy Midshipwoman Abagail Hearns, who is the first Midshipwoman in the GSN. Grayson is, as you'll recall, highly old fashioned and traditional, and views women as people to be protected, not exposed to danger. Honor does the math, and figures that Hearns would've been eight when Honor saved Grayson. She enrolled in non-"womanly" courses, including Phys. Ed. Later in the chapter, Honor lightly mocks the concept of "tactical genius". And in the chapter following that, someone imitates Honor's mannerisms.
If the book hadn't been published ten years ago, I'd swear David Weber was trolling me.
