Anne gets sexually assaulted by a clone of her friend Rita (and is, of course, unsure whether she enjoyed it or not), just before Rita is tranq'd by Jane. Anne isn't sure whether she's more confused over the sexual assault or being saved by "the resident combat lesbian".

Oookay, let's take it as we go.

They chose to describe Jane as the "resident combat lesbian". I'm not sure why, considering that of the three staff members at her position, she's the only woman. Not the only one among the main characters, but I'm still peturbed at how most of Jane's characterization is based on "SHE LIEKS GIRLS LOL I MAK JOKES ABOUT THAT". We've had one scene featuring her that wasn't dragged right back around to her sexuality, and that was her first one, the job interview.

"Combat". Jane is support staff. She stays out of combat, relaying information to the actual fighters. She's no more a combatant than an air traffic controller is a pilot. The scene in question is the first time we or Anne have actually seen her in a fight, which makes the "resident" part incorrect as well.

"Lesbian". Given that one of the first things they described Jane as was a closeted lesbian, how does Anne even know about it? In fact, the term "resident" implies that it's common knowledge, so unless she came out entirely offscreen, it's even more confusing.

They also mentioned that during the incident in question, a male character was apparently raped by Rita. I liked it better when it was an unspecified, traumatic Incident involving turnips. I also could've gone without knowing she'd taken another character's "ocular virginity". I like the interpretation of her as a Wild-child borderline psychopath, instead of the Emotionless Girl she is in canon, but you've turned her into a repeat rapist. I don't care what superpowers she has, that's just Not Cool.

The worst part is that aside from a few glaring flaws, this fic is really, really good. I start to get into the groove, and then WHAM! I get knocked right off the horse by some forced Shout Out or jarring dialogue. I like Shout Outs as much as the next man, but there's a time and a place, Mr. Ficcer, a time and a place.

First, then

You may have guessed which fandom I'm referring to by now, actually.
