When you think about it, this is basically a postmodern film. But since it's an action romantic comedy with video game tropes instead of Serious Adult Drama, critics can't get behind it.

Moreover, this explanation — and the other ones that aren't as explicit but basically make the same point, that it's a story for, about, and only even potentially satisfying to teen gamer comic-reading boy hipsters (am I leaving anything out?) — defies all common sense as well as anecdotal evidence I can serve you right now.This makes me uncomfortable. Not because it's incorrect, but because as what's technically a conservative, I'm fairly sure I'm not supposed to agree with NPR. I think there's a card I'm supposed to turn in now.
